In this lesson, let's learn some common sentence patterns in Vietnamese that native speakers use in daily conversation.

You can use these phrases to help you speak better and make your conversation sounds more natural.

So below are 15 common sentence patterns in Vietnamese. More phrases will be updated soon so stay tuned!

1. Hình như (là)

Hình như or hình như là means “to seem/look like”.

You can use it to talk about something that appears to be true but you are not sure of.

Example 1:

• A: Ủa, cái này của ai?
  Huh, whose is this?

• B: Hình như là của Vân
  Looks like (it) belongs to Vân

Example 2:

• Hình như là mình thấy cái này ở đâu rồi.
  Seems like I’ve seen this one somewhere already.

2. Thí dụ (như)

You can also say Ví dụ (như) or chẳng hạn (như), where the word như can be omitted.

They all have the same meaning of “let’s say …” or “for example …”. So you can use these phrases to give suggestions or possible examples of something.

Example 1:

• Thí dụ như sau này giàu bạn sẽ làm gì?
  Let’s say later on (when) being rich what would you do?

Example 2:

• Mình đã đi du lịch nhiều nơi, chẳng hạn như Huế, Sài Gòn, Hà Nội
  I went traveling to many places, for example Huế, Sài Gòn, Hà Nội

3. Đó là lý do

Đó là lý do literally means “that’s the reason” or it simply translates to "that’s why".

You can also say Đó là lý do tại sao which means “that’s the reason why".

Example 1:

• Mình rất là thích Việt Nam. Đó là lý do mình chọn sống ở đây.
  I really like Vietnam. That’s why I chose to live here.

Example 2:

• Ảnh đi tập gym mỗi ngày. Đó là lý do tại sao ảnh rất là khoẻ.
  He workouts at the gym every day. That’s the reason why he’s very strong/healthy.

4. Ý của mình là

Or Ý mình là can be translated as “I mean …” or “what I mean is …”

You can also change the pronoun and say Ý của bạn là … meaning "What you mean is …”

Example 1:

• A: Bạn không thích cái này hả?
  You don’t like this one?

• Không phải! Ý của mình là nó hơi mắc.
  No! What I mean is it’s a bit expensive.

Example 2:

• Ý của bạn là gì?
  What do you mean?

5. Theo mình (thì)

Theo mình or Theo mình thì can have the meaning of “In my opinion”, or when you say For me", "To me” and then you give someone your opinion.

Example 1:

• Theo mình thì tụi mình nên đợi cho trời hết mưa.
  In my opinion we should wait for it (to be) no more rain.

Example 2:

• Theo bạn mình nên nói gì?
  In your opinion what should I say?

6. Mong là

Mong là and the phrase Hy vọng (là) literally mean “to hope that". You can simply translate and use them as “hopefully” or "(I) hope that ..."

Example 1:

• Mong là hôm nay trời không có mưa!
  Hopefully today there is no rain!

Example 2:

• Mong là còn vé xem phim!
  Hopefully still have movie tickets!

Example 3:

• Mình hy vọng là bạn sẽ hiểu.
  I hope that you will understand.

7. Thật ra (là/thì)

Thật ra (là/thì) as the meaning of “actually” or “in fact", "in reality”. In Southern dialect, you will also come across another variation, which is Thực ra (là/thì).

So use them to when you want to explain yourself or to give a fact.

Example 1:

• Thật ra là mình cũng không chắc.
  Actually, I’m also not sure.

Example 2:

• Thật ra là cổ có người yêu rồi.
  Actually, she already has a lover.

Example 3:

• Thực ra thì mình cũng mới biết.
  Actually I also just knew (about something).

8. May mắn là

The word may mắn literally means ‘luck’ or ‘lucky', and in this case May mắn là can be translate as ‘luckily’.

There is also a more casual way to say ‘luckily’ which is Hên là.

Example 1:

• May mắn là không có chuyện gì xảy ra.
  Luckily nothing happened.

Example 2:

• Nãy trời mưa, hên là mình có mang dù!
  Just now it rained, luckily I did carry an umbrella!

9. Nói chung là

Nói chung or Nói chung là has the meaning of ‘generally speaking’, ‘generally’, and also ‘overall’ or ‘on a whole’.

Example 1:

• Ảnh nói chung là một người tốt.
  He is generally a good person.

Example 2:

• Nói chung là sống ở đây khá là tốt!
  Overall living here is quite good!

10. Tự dưng

Tự dưng or Tự nhiên has the meaning of ‘all of a sudden’ or ‘suddenly’.

Example 1:

• Tự dưng mình thấy thèm phở quá!
  Suddenly I feel craving for phở so much!

To make the question "why suddenly ...?", you can say sao tự nhiên ...? or sao tự dưng ...?.

Example 2:

• Sao tự nhiên bạn giận mình?
  Why suddenly you’re angry with me?

11. Cá nhân mình nghĩ/thấy (là) ...

You can say something like:

• Cá nhân mình nghĩ (là) ...
  Personally I think that ...

• Cá nhân mình thấy (là) ...
  Personally I find/feel that ...

Where the word cá nhân means 'personal' as in ý kiến cá nhân meaning 'personal opinion'.

Example 1:

• Cá nhân mình nghĩ là bạn không nên đi.
  Personally I think that you shouldn’t go.

Example 2:

• Cá nhân mình thấy cuốn sách này rất là bổ ích.
  Personally I find this book very useful.

12. Mình có cảm giác (là) …

Meaning 'I have a feeling (that)', where the word cảm giác means 'feeling'.

Example 1:

• Mình có cảm giác là mình coi phim này rồi.
  I have a feeling that I watched this movie already.

Example 2:

• Mình có cảm giác hôm nay nóng hơn hôm qua.
  I have a feeling today is hotter than yesterday.

13. Mình không chắc (là) …

Meaning 'I’m not sure (that)…'.

Example 1:

• Mình không chắc là họ sẽ tới.
  I’m not sure that they sẽ tới

Example 2:

• Mình không chắc là mình có thể làm được.
  I’m not sure that I can do (it).

14. Đối với mình (thì) …

Meaning 'As for me', 'To me'.

Example 1:

• Đối với mình bạn rất là quan trọng.
  To me, you’re very important.

Example 2:

• Đối với mình thì mình không thích món này.
  As for me, I don't like this dish.

15. Theo mình biết/thấy/hiểu thì …

You can say something like:

• Theo mình biết thì ...
  From what I know / As far as I know.

• Theo mình thấy thì ...
  From what I see / As far as I see.

• Theo mình hiểu thì ...
  From what I understand / As far as I understand.

Example 1:

• Theo mình biết thì cổ chưa có bạn trai.
  As far as I know, she has yet to have a boyfriend.

Example 2:

• Theo mình thấy thì đồ ăn ở đây khá là ngon.
  From what I (can) see, the food here is quite tasty.

Example 3:

• Theo mình hiểu thì nó không phải là như vậy.
  From what I understand, it’s not like that.
